Ghosts of Newport Past - Still In the Works

For those of you who might be wondering where the promised series on Newport's graveyards is - it's a-comin'! There's just so much material to collate, which is my euphamistic way of saying I've taken a boatload of graveyard and gravestone pictures over the years and I'm still trying to get them organized. In the meantime, I'll let you gaze at this gorgeous angel from the gravestone of Mary Gibbs in Trinity Episcopal's churchyard.

  1. ...beautiful!! It has a Gaelic feel to it. Do you remember the date on it?

  2. Kelly, the inscription on the gravestone says: "Mary daughter of George and Mary Gibbs died May 27, 1772 aged 24 days" Yeah, I catalog every gravestone I shoot. And the infant mortality rate back then was incredible. One of the stones I'll talk about in one of the articles marks the grave of six children in one family who never made it to the age of 2 years. Incredible!

  4. wow 1772! Like I keep saying here in the west the white settlers have been here for hardly a blink in time.

    all that history is wonderful!

  6. It is great that the inscription survived so well. So many of the old stones get worn from the elements. That one is really lovely.

  7. ...thanks for the date. There is something about studying gravestones and seeing and touching the history...very intense.

  8. glad you supplied the date, I was wondering....the stone is in wonderful shape considering acid rain and all the other assaults of time....

since you have lots of of material perhaps you should designate one day a week (tomb tuesday or sleepy saturday or stoney sunday) post a gravestone/graveyard pic... you won't have to worry so much about getting the pics organized - just mine the archives and throw us a bone....
