Theme Thursday - Collection

I have a tendency to collect things; it's either that or I'm a victim of the compulsive hoarding syndrome. But all of my collections really do have a use outside of being a security blanket - they get continuous use. I have a collection of hats, and I wear a hat every time I go out the door (no picture of them, though; I just couldn't get a shot I liked). But here are some I did get good shots of.

For instance, I really do play these musical instruments.

This is only a partial view of my CD collection, 3 rows out of 10 1/2, over 500 CDs. I do like my music!

And of course - books! Like the CDs, this is only a small part of my library.

To me, musical instruments, CDs and records, and books help to make up a home. We house our collections in our homes, and they raise the quality of life in our living spaces, making them places of comfort and happiness. That's the theme of the media files I've chosen this week.

The first is an audio file of the song "Julia's Cupboards" by a group most of you probably never heard of: Bungarra, from Fremantle, Western Australia. My friend Kate Daniels, who grew up in Freo, sent me a sample of Bungarra's music years ago, and it gets frequent listening. Unfortunately Bungarra no longer exists (there's a band by that name now in W.A., but it's totally unrelated), but Kate tells me that in their day ('70s into the early '80s) they were very much a part of the Perth-Fremantle area music scene, very hippie-ish with parties and campfires in the parking lot afterwards. Ah, that does take me back to my own youth! Anyhow, "Julia's Cupboards" was written by guitarist/vocalist Rick Martin for his wife Julia, also a member of the band, and her ability to make a house a home.

Of course, the things we collect and grace our home with are our favorite things, so I had to include Julie Andrews singing "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music.

And my favorite song about creating a loving and comfortable home: Crosby, Stills, and Nash singing Graham Nash's masterpiece, "Our House". Enjoy!

  5. Thanks, everybody!

Willow, that's just one section. Among other things I also have all of the Ellery Queen novels, and the Josephine Tey books as well (okay, she only wrote 7, so it wasn't hard to collect the complete set). Oh yeah, and most of Stephen King's books, including the full set of the Dark Tower series. Yeah, I practically live in used book stores.

My best friend saw them last month in S.D. and said they were still great, still harmonic and played alot of Buffalo Springfield.

  21. hmmm a lot of my collections aren't really for using at all, just for looking at and handling.

    except the buttons of course.

collections can really help 'make' a home, can't they?
