Theme Thursday - Vegetable

"I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green." ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

Music: "The Garden Song" by David Mallett

  1. I can relate to that quote. I've been gazing besottedly at my young radish sprouts.

  5. Thanks everybody!

Kim, yeah, it's been my earworm ever since I found it last night. Definitely a nice song to have running on a loop in the brain.

Clever Pup, I took that shot back in the Summer of 2005 on returning from a trip to Newport's weekly farmers' market. I couldn't help myself; I just had to arrange the produce as a still life and start shooting. Last night I dragged it out of the archives and played with it in Photoshop, and that's the result.

  13. Hi roy,
your quote reminds me of the awe & wonder i used to see in my young students' faces when i used to teach elementary school. when their bean plants would grow, it was like WOW! BAM!
    Thanks for sharing.

  15. All this talk of 'growing your own' this week, I'm almost motivated to plant some vegies rather than my measly herb garden!

  16. I didn't comment earlier because I wanted to come back and hear the song first.

I liked it very much. A nice voice and tempo for this quiet evening. Thanks!

  17. Thank you for the song. I closed my eyes to listen to it and then that helps me to concentrate on the words. It was such a true song. I can remember when I had my garden growing that I would sometimes just go check each day to see how much it had grown from the day before. I had to learn you could not do this, that it was better to wait a few days.

I really like how the picture turned out. It looks like it would be good to hang on a kitchen wall. All these veggies today, I had to go buy some. Steamed broccoli sounds so good right now.

    God bless.
