It's Still Snowing

I woke up to find that 4 more inches of light, fluffy snow had fallen overnight, and the forecast is for about that much more in light snow before the front finally moves off Sunday afternoon. This is real Roy-Heaven! It hasn't really stopped snowing all day today, it's just been a very, very light snowfall. As I had to go to the library today, I decided to wander a bit on the way home to get some nice, scenic shots. Tomorrow I'll do the grand tour of Ballard Park and Gooseneck Cove, which I'm sure will produce another crop of scenery. But today yielded some nice, almost domestic shots in a gentle walk around town.

My favorite cemetery, the Clifton Burying Ground, tucked in amongst the neighborhood's backyard gardens on the hill behind the Newport Public Library, today was tucked in snugly under a comfy blanket of snow.

The shops in the Victorian storefronts on the upper end of Bellevue Ave. across from the Viking Hotel.

A Federal-style brick house on Kay St, with it's wreath still on the door and the evergreens surrounding it covered in snow. This one's another candidate for a Christmas card!

  1. ...you lucky duck! I would love to see a snow cover like that! Looking forward to your photos of Ballard. I love the shot of the shopfronts, and I always love the shots of the gravestones--beautiful and peaceful. Have fun in the snow!!

  2. Snowing on the graves; great shot. We had a bit of snow here, but just a dust. Looks like you're getting a noreaster, no?

  4. Wow I am jealous of your perfect photo opportunity local!!! Don't you just love graveyards? And doesn't snow just make them more of what ever they have better?

    Cheers!

  5. Kelly - I always have fun in the snow! Last Winter and now this one seem to be hitting my all-time favorite list.

tut - Nah, not a nor'easter; it's only about 4 or 5 inches, and when it's finally done tomorrow the count may rise to 6 or 7 inches. This is just average Winter stuff. The 22 inches we got on Dec. 19 & 20, now that was a nor'easter!

    Thanks Skip!

Colette - This cemetery is one of my favorite spots in Newport, and it looks even better in Spring and Summer. It's a small, cozy little place tucked into a residential neighborhood, with graves going back to the 1600s and early 1700s. What makes this place a gem is that 3 backyard gardens border it, and in flower season actually tend to spill into it, making the place absolutely gorgeous. I'm gonna have to do one of my "Ghosts of Newport Past" spotlight photo essays on this one sometime soon.

  6. it is beautiful, but makes for scary driving. You have taken some amazing pics...inspired me to make the trip out to the park today, Toby will love a romp in the snow, maybe he'll catch a sledder.

  7. I sure wish we had graveyard like that out here on the west coast. There is a miner's graveyard in the small hamlet of Roslyn (where Northern Exposure was filmed) that dates back to the late 19th century -- it's up and over Snoqualmie Pass, just on the eastern side of the Cascade Mountains. The graveyard is nearly as big as the town! It makes a great day-trip, and many photo-ops. You'd really love it.
