Scenes from the Macro-World - Quarry Flowers

Sunday I stopped in the meadow on the floor of the old quarry in Ballard Park. They always let the meadow grow without cutting for most of the Summer so visitors can get to see our native wildflowers. After standing in the Quaking Aspen grove for my weekly dose of Mama Gaiea's spirit energy, I went stalking flowers you all haven't seen yet this year. So far it's just the Daisy Fleabane (top photo) and the Canadian Thistle (bottom photo). More will be coming - the Yarrow is almost ready for me to shoot; maybe this weekend.

  4. Thanks everybody!

K - I use a Canon PowerShot S5 IS, which is much more "professional" than a point-and-shoot but not really an SLR. It allows me to shoot in manual (which means I get to set the shutter speed, ISO speed, f/stop, white balance, etc., rather than it being done automatically - although you can opt for the automatic mode as well), which means I have control over the final result rather than having to accept what the automatic settings "decided" the shot should look like.

I can also attach extra lenses (I have a Raynox 2.2x telephoto and a wide-angle) and filters (like my neutral density filters and my circular polarizer). It has 2 built-in macro settings; I use the SuperMacro because it lets you put the lens right up to the subject if need be. These shots were taken in SuperMacro mode.

  6. Woah! I'm really enjoying the template/theme of this site. It's simple, yet effective.
A lot of times it's hard to get that "perfect balance" between superb usability and visual appearance. I must say you have done a very good job with this. In addition, the blog loads very quick for me on Chrome. Exceptional Blog!
